Ta Pen learns English
Magali Castro Gyr (Volunteer Committee Member of NGO Don du Chœur Cambodia since 2013), English teacher at Ecole La Découverte in Geneva, returns after 9 months in Ta Pen, Cambodia...
A personal challenge as well as a windfall for the students, staff and villagers of Ta Pen, Magali dedicated 9 months of volunteer work at school. Using teaching skills in «Active Pedagogy», enormous enthusiasm as well as an acute sense of communication, Magali taught students and staff in Ta Pen helping each learn and progress in English.
In addition to their assigned workload, Sreymao and Polen, government-appointed teachers, specialists in Khmer and Physics/Chemistry (non-qualified as English teachers) taught English classes with on-going pedagogical support from Magali. They worked very hard together to enhance class lessons using social exchange, play and oral language activities.
In addition to teaching English classes, Magali organised extra-curricular activities to further develop English language learning: games, singing, reading, arts & crafts, science and projecting films. Various themes were explored such as respecting the environment to more playful activities such as a clown show. Some of these activities were in collaboration with other local NGOs... We are very grateful for their support as we have established invaluable partnerships to prepare future vocational training and further education for Ta Pen’s youths.
Nine months of intense emotions and work, much laughter and a very rich experience also combined with periods of solitude. Certainly a very unique life experience.
Bravo and a heartfelt thank you Magali for all that you brought to Ta Pen. Starting in November, the baton will be passed onto a qualified English teacher from the University of Pannasastra to hopefully continue the excellent work implemented.
